The City Church, is of course, a church, and the Bible describes the church using the metaphor of a body: ‘’For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ’’ (1 Cor. 12:12For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.).

This metaphor is a detailed illustration of how we’re uniquely gifted and created to serve different functions; how everyone needs everyone to function in order to be a healthy body and how all of us, as separate parts, find purpose and unity in Jesus, ‘’the head of the body, the church’’ (Col. 1:18And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. ).

Members of the church, are the church, according to the Bible (Eph. 2:19-22Christ Our Cornerstone

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.,
).

The membership process for a church is more than what our culture makes of a typical ‘membership.’ This isn’t Gold’s Gym or a country club. Again, members ARE the church. “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Eph. 1:4-5; 2:19Christ Our Cornerstone

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
).

You don’t join for the perks–although members do enjoy greater access to The City and certain ministry team opportunities are only available to members.

Membership takes place in a person’s heart and spirit. It is the Lord who sets the members in the Body as it pleases Him (I Corinthians 12:18But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. ). People are added to the Lord and the Church by the work of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church[a] daily those who were being saved. ; 5:14And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, ). The process of some form of public identification to a local church is biblical and historical and early church fathers used a process of teaching (Didache) to screen people and safeguard the church during persecution (Acts 11:26And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. ; Acts 20:27-32For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
). Public membership also makes a declaration that a person is accountable to other Christians and spiritual authority for their lives (Hebrews 13:17Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. ) and becoming a partner in the vision.
